Below is a table which includes the props we used and where we bought them from. We found it easy collecting our props as our opening is set in modern day.

Location Sourcing

Location Sourcing

Horror films tend to be set in isolated places, typically in the countryside.
We wanted to film in a similar area to comply with the conventions of the horror genre.

Scream 4 (large, country home)

Amityville Horror (large, country home)

Cabin in the Woods (small, old, isolated cabin)

We also wanted to maintain naturalistic mise-en-scene for the inside of the home, like is seen in many horror films.

(Scream)

(Funny Games)

(Insidious)

To achieve this we decided to film at one of our own houses so that the setting and mise-en-scene of the character’s home would be realistic

Our options were:

Annabel Briggs’ House
Annabel Evelyn’s House

Reasons for:

  • Painted white - connotations of the colours can be used to symbolise innocence of the victim
  •  Hedge surrounds house, makes it appear more isolated
Reasons for:

  • Countryside
  • Wall length windows means it is easy to film the outside shots which we planned to do through a window
  •  Surrounded by a large hedge, makes it appear more isolated
Reasons against:

  • Town area
  • Nearby/surrounding houses
Reasons against:

  • Angle and positioning of the house means natural lighting can’t be used
  • Semi-detached house, neighbours can sometimes be heard

Jasmine Poynter’s House
Georgina Sparks’ House

Reasons for:

  •  Realistic and natural-looking mise-en-scene
  •  Location (i.e. suburban area) is relatable for many of our audience which could make the opening more frightening
Reasons for:

  • Isolated
  • Coutntryside
  • Big glass windows, good for natural lighting and fits with storyline
Reasons against:

  • Town area
  • Nearby/surrounding houses
Reasons against:

  • Harder for everyone to get transport to

We decided George’s house would be best for filming as we liked the setting due to its isolated area in the countryside and the lake in the background could be used to create an eerie atmosphere.

It will also get good, natural lighting from the large kitchen windows during the morning where/when we are planning to film the majority of our opening, which reduces costs and health and safety risks.

Choosing a Font

Fonts

When choosing fonts for the title of our film we wanted to incorporate the horror aspect. We did this by looking for fonts that where clear with a blockish look to them. For instance the bubble affect used on fonts such as comic sans would not be appropriate for a horror film, as it would confuse the message we were trying to put across.

Delusion- Comic Sans = Too bubbly and childish.

Delusion-English157 BT = Not very clear and too elegant/ flamboyant.

Delusion- Zolano Sans BTN = Looks plain and technology inspired.

Delusion- Bauhaus 93 = Not appropriate for horror as it is bubbly and friendly.

Delusion- Times New Roman = We liked this font but is looked a bit too old fashioned for when our film was set so we had a look at similar styles with a modern twist.

Delusion- Courier New = We felt this was a good match for our film with an old fashioned undertone it looks bold and clear with out being bubbly and childish. We liked the details on the end adding design and depth to the font.

DELUSION- Courier New = Making the font all in capitals makes the title stand out and make a statement with out having to underline or add any details. It ties in with the urgency of a horror film.

For our opening we used American Typewriter, which is very similar to Courier New. As we edited in the titles on iMovie, the program has default Apple fonts and American Typewriter is almost as if it were Apple's version of Courier New.

Final Storyboard and Altercations

Storyboarding

Our First Storyboard

Our initial story board was too rough and was lacking in detail

The order of the shots wasn't chronological either as we kept on changing our minds on what we wanted

Thinking Maps of our Initial Idea

Thinking Maps of our Initial Idea

After creating mood boards, we pooled our ideas together to create a rough outline of what we wanted our opening to be like and some specific features and ideas that we wanted to include.

Mood board

Mood board

My mood board largely revolved around the idea of a schizophrenic main character, inspired by the film, The Black Swan.

I also liked the idea of games being a tormenting feature for the main character and the audience. From this I thought of playing on the idea of what is reality and what is a game, making the audience question the sanity of the characters involved.

After doing the title sequence analysis of Se7en, I researched into what were some of the directors influences and found out about the photographer, Joel Peter-Whitkin. His photographs were disturbing as they had parts of the body scattered around in the photos.
